HER STORY

An ancient creature in a modern ocean

Amber is a wild loggerhead sea turtle — part of an ancient lineage that has navigated the world’s oceans for more than 100 million years. She was first encountered by the team at the Cayman Islands Department of Environment during routine nesting-beach surveys on Grand Cayman.

A satellite transmitter, carefully attached to her shell, now beams her position back to researchers each time she surfaces to breathe. The data helps the DoE understand migration corridors, foraging zones and the threats she faces along the way

Loggerheads are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, while some populations are classified as Endangered under the ESA. In Cayman, they face pressures from habitat loss, poaching, artificial lighting, and the long, slow reach of climate change warming the very beaches where they nest.

Caybrew Lagerhead

How it works

Lagerhead is Caybrew’s tribute to Cayman’s turtles and to the researchers and volunteers who dedicate their time to protecting it. Named after the loggerhead species, it is a smooth amber lager brewed with toasted malt notes and a crisp finish.

For every can, pint or pitcher poured, a donation will be made directly to the Cayman Islands Department of Environment, funding turtle conservation through targeted research, nesting beach monitoring and public education programmes.

The first turtle to be tagged in the DoE’s new turtle tracking programme, Amber, had her satellite transmitter sponsored by the initial funds raised through Lagerhead’s launch.

The Cayman Islands Department of Environment leads sea turtle research, tagging and protection across all three islands.

Argos satellite tags transmit Amber’s GPS position with each surface breath, giving researchers a continuous picture of her movements.

May 2026

Lagerhead Launches

Caybrew debuts Lagerhead, a 4.4% ABV amber lager, in cans and on draught. For every purchase of Lagerhead, a donation is made to the Cayman Islands Department of Environment towards turtle conservation.

June 2026

Amber is Tagged

Using the initial funds raised by Lagerhead, researchers from the Cayman Islands Department of Environment fitted Amber with a satellite transmitter on a nesting beach in Grand Cayman, beginning her journey.

July 2026

First Open-Water Track (Placeholder)

Amber's transmitter logs her first deep-water foraging dive, covering more than 200 km in a single week as she heads toward Cuban waters.
